Jest is a character in Marissa Meyer's Heartless, and the love interest of the main protagonist, Catherine. He was first introduced at the King's black and white ball, where he gave his first public performance as the King's new joker.
Jest's first encounter with Cath was at the palace gardens during the black and white ball after she runs away from the ballroom. Jest comes from Chess, a kingdom across the Looking Glass, and works for the White Queen & King. He was on a mission to steal Cath's heart and give it to his queen in order to stop a timeless war between the two rival kingdoms of Chess. He is a Rook as he had the ability to travel faster than any carriage. He is later beheaded by Sir Peter during a fight with Hatta, Cath, Raven and the Jabberwock. This leads Cath, Jest's love interest, to become heartless and the wicked Queen of Hearts.

He has black, wavy hair, often stuck to his forehead due to wearing his 3-pointed jester's hat all day. He also has lemon-yellow eyes, prominent dimples, tan skin, and a slender yet fit form. He has black kohl drawn around his eyes, giving off the look of a mask. He likewise has a heart (drawn with kohl) "dripping" on his cheek. He wears a black suit and joker hat alongside a raven companion (often perched on his shoulder).

Jest is a humorous companion and often quite sarcastic. Even though it seems he takes everything as a joke, he will do anything for those that he loves. He likes to leave people in awe from his magic shows.
