Hatta is a supporting character in the book, Heartless. He is a travelling hat maker and salesman and the owner of Hatta's Marvelous Millinery

Appearance[]

Hatta, even though he is young, has silvery white hair, with tufts that fall around his ears, and the rest being tied back with a velvet ribbon. He has soft violet eyes, his facial features equally as delicate as his eyes.

He is very handsome while simultaneously being very pretty. His smile is heart thumpingly open, honest and beautiful.

Hatta dresses exquisitely and is often found wearing bright and oddly coloured clothing. When Catherine Pinkerton first met him he was wearing plum coattails and a crimson silk cravat, with a matching purple hat. He never goes anywhere without a hat on and hates seeing bare heads. He always carries his pocket watch with him and usually has his cane on hand.

At the beach, he is described to be wearing a formal cut navy suit and an orange and purple striped waistcoat. He is also wearing a matching orange and purple top hat.

Personality[]

Hatta is a very closed off and moody person. He can be very rude and is very critical of strangers, and is cautious around people he doesn't know well. He can be haughty and overly confident. He often makes jabs and sly comments towards other people. He puts on a very strong and confident front, staying cool and collected. Hatta is very witty and is always ready with a comeback.

Hatta frequently goes back and forth between Chess & Hearts to escape Time, with his pocket watch ticking louder as Time gets closer. When passing through the maze to get to either Hearts or Chess, the Sisters usually take some of his time away, leaving him closer to madness.

Madness is a family trait that has been passed down to every member of his family; Hatta runs from time to avoid that fate.

History[]

Hatta was born in Hearts and is originally from there, just like Catherine. After his father's untimely suicide, he felt it was better for him to move in an attempt to avoid the same fate: madness. He left Hearts and moved to Chess, where he met Jest, who introduced him to the White King and Haigha. Hatta was poor and alone, but the King granted him pawnship and he and Haigha became messengers for the Red & White Queendoms.

During his travels back and forth from the Kingdoms, he collected materials to make hats for the Queen. He started earning a reputation and was known as the finest of Hatters.

He was assigned to guide Jest and Raven on their travel through the Looking Glass to Hearts. He was also a messenger for the King and Queen to report back to them about the mission.

Heartless[]

Hatta was first introduced in chapter eighteen when Jest takes Catherine to his hat shop for a tea party. The Jabberwock attacks and Hatta helps distract the beast while the others make a run for it.

At the beach, he gives Catherine a new hat shaped like a macaron. While in the shop, he tells her how his father killed himself with a brim tolliker because he went mad. During the turtle days bake off, one of the judges turns into a mock turtle and Hatta helps him up and offers a supporting word.

Catherine goes to visit Hatta after the mishap at the bake off and he is less than pleased to see her. She has come with a proposition for him and he gets very angry, not wanting to talk to her. She asks him if his hats are dangerous and accuses him of making hats that change people. Only because the turtle was wearing his hat when he transformed into a mock turtle. He tells her he makes hats out of special materials from Chess and then explains a bit of his backstory to her. In the end he declines her proposition and she goes home.

After Jest and Catherine run away from the kings proposal, they go to Hatta's shop, where he welcomes them. They explain the plan to him and he takes them through a mirror to the field with a well in it. They speak with the sisters and pay them to open the maze for them They go through the maze and after hearing a prophecy from the sisters, they down into a room with items on a table and many doors. As they are about to go through the Looking Glass to Chess, Cath opens a door and sees Mary Ann screaming and chooses to go through to save her, even though it may mean the prophecy might come true.

She is there fighting the Jabberwock until Jest, Hatta and Raven show up and help her fight. This is when the first part of the prophecy comes true and Jest dies.

Hatta had unintentionally started everything with bad pumpkin seeds he had brought over from Chess. He had tried to give them to Sir Peter, but was unsuccessful. Instead of taking them home with him, he threw them into Peters pumpkin patch. Peter's wife ate them and it turned her into the Jabberwock, and when the turtle ate them it turned him into a mock turtle.

Cath goes to visit Hatta after everything that has happened. He is sitting alone in his hat shop and they have a conversation. His pocket watch it ticking like crazy, revealing that Time has come for him and he can no longer run from madness. He has finally gone insane and Catherine leaves him there.

This is the story of how he became The Mad Hatter.

Relationships[]

Jest[]

Jest and Hatta met in Chess after Hatta moved their following his fathers suicide. Jest helped Hatta become a pawn for the White King and they became friends. Hatta guided Jest and Raven to Hearts for their mission. They were very close as friends, though Hatta wanted it to be more. Hatta did not like Catherine Pinkerton because of her relationship with Jest.

Catherine Pinkerton[]

Catherine and Hatta had a sort of love-hate relationship. One minute Hatta would be fine with her and the next minute he would be upset with her. He shared his past with her and made her a macaroon hat. They weren't necessarily friends but both had one thing in common. Jest. He tolerated her because of her relationship with Jest, but it never really went past that. Hatta almost always had something negative to say about Cath, but yet she still enjoyed his company. After Jest's death, Catherine goes to see Hatta and finds that he has gone mad. Cath blames Hatta for everything that happened even though it was an accident.

Haigha[]

Hatta meets Haigha in Chess and they start working together as Messengers for the two kingdoms of Chess. He comes with Raven, Jest and Hatta to Hearts and lived with Hatta in his shop. He makes tea for Hatta and they seem to be close friends. We assume that Haigha stays with Hatta after he goes mad.
